Day 1

Welcome to the Land of the Thunder Dragon

Descending through clouds and winding through valleys is your first experience of an ancient land, undisturbed by time. Upon arriving at Paro airport, you’ll be treated to a traditional Bhutanese welcome before transferring to your elegant lodge. Begin your exploration of the breathtaking Paro Valley with a walk to the 17th century Paro Dzong, followed by a stroll through the picturesque Paro township.

Explore Bhutan's cultural heartland

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic flight to Bumthang, Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual heartland. Reaching Amankora Bumthang, your luxury retreat with fortress-style walls and courtyard, you’ll be treated to views of the former King’s palace. Your trekking discovery of Bumthang begins at the fabulous Jampey Lhakhang, where you’ll soak up the atmosphere of chanting monks and spin the ancient prayer wheels.

Day 3

Magical valleys and a luxury mountain sanctuary

Explore the stunningly beautiful and seldom visited Ura Valley on foot, enjoying beautiful valleys, remote villages, mountain passes and some off the beaten track monasteries. This afternoon, take time to relax in Amankora’s courtyard, exploring the nearby palace grounds, or indulge in a spa treatment.

Day 4

Colour, culture & atmosphere

Today you set out for the beautiful Tang Valley to explore on foot. In the afternoon, discover the local village of Jakar town. Wander the small bazaar and marvel at traditional emporiums before visiting Jakar Dzong to stroll the cobblestone courtyard and take in valley views below. It is then time to discover the Wangdi Choling Palace, a 19th century palace that now functions as a monastic school, home to a body of novice monks.

Day 5

A glacial valley wilderness

Today you head west to the rugged Black Mountains and the mystical Phobjikha Valley – a region famous for its remote glacial wilderness, abundant wildlife and ancient monastery. The town of Trongsa, perched dramatically above a gorge and seemingly floating in the clouds, is the perfect place to break your journey. Arriving at your stunning lodge, with its traditional bukhari log fire, enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the lodge’s living room before a sumptuous three-course dinner.

Day 6

Trek through ancient & pristine valleys

After breakfast overlooking the spectacular glacial valley floor, you begin trekking through the pristine wilderness of the Phobjikha Valley to the 450-year-old Gangtey Goemba. Occupying a beautiful hilltop position, this intimate and serene monastery houses a cavernous prayer hall decorated with beautifully ornate paintings.

Day 7

Discover the fertile valley of Punakha

After an alfresco breakfast, you head west for Punakha – the fertile, warm, and beautiful valley located at the confluence of the Mo and Pho Chhu rivers. We stop to take a short walk through rice fields to Chime Lhakhang - the abode of fertility and a temple dedicated to the infamous Divine Madman. Arriving at the elegant Uma Punakha in time for lunch, enjoy the delicious food in the company of spectacular valley views.

Day 8

Ancient traditions & festivals

Overlooking fruit orchards and emerald green rice paddies, enjoy a relaxed breakfast before exploring the arresting Punakha Dzong and savouring an atmospheric Tsechu festival. Joining Bhutanese families who come from far and wide in their finest traditional dress, enjoy an authentic and truly engaging experience as monks in colourful costumes and elaborate masks perform ancient dances and observe time-honoured traditions.

Day 9

Explore Thimphu's fortresses and monasteries

Today you head to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Explore one of the world’s most enigmatic capital cities - an enchanting mix of crimson-robed monks, centuries-old whitewashed fortresses and men and women in colourful dress. Heading high above the Thimphu Valley to a 15th century fortress-like temple and monastic school. Spin the large prayer wheels, listen to the monks chanting and take in stunning views of Thimphu from the large cobblestoned courtyard.

Day 10

Deluxe overnight trek

After breakfast you transfer to the Sangchokor Buddhist Institute and the starting point for your trek to the 8th century Bumdra Monastery and your deluxe camp for the night. You begin trekking through forests enjoying views down to Paro Valley and the Paro Dzong. After refreshing with cold towels and a gourmet three-course lunch, a final ascent brings you to your destination.

Day 11

Discover the fabled Tiger’s Nest

You make your gradual descent along switchback trails shaded by a canopy of giant hemlock trees until the golden roof of the fabled Tiger’s Nest comes into view. An important Buddhist pilgrimage site, this impressive hermitage is located on the face of a sheer 1,000 metre granite cliff. On your return to Paro, stop to have your prayer flags blessed by the resident monk at the intimate 7th century Kyichu Monastery.

Day 12

Cycle among snowcapped mountains & lush valleys

Setting out on a breathtaking drive to the Cheli La Pass at 3,810 metres, you are greeted by views to the magnificent snowcapped Mount Jomolhari and the Haa Valley below, before hopping on your bikes to begin your freewheel glide back to Paro town.

Day 13

Departure

After savouring one last breakfast in the company of breathtaking valley views, you transfer to Paro International Airport for your flight home and farewell the magical Kingdom of Bhutan.
