Adventure in the shadows of a hulking Costa Rican volcano

Costa Rica is an exotic playground brimming with lush rainforests, astonishing wildlife and jaw-dropping scenery. It’s also home to the spectacular and imposing Arenal Volcano. Looming large and ominous, Arenal is an unavoidable presence when travelling in Costa Rica’s north. Its perfectly symmetrical conical shape is a dream for sightseers and photographers.

While it would be easy to sit back and simply enjoy spectacular views of the volcano, the Arenal region is best appreciated when it is hiked, boated, rappelled and otherwise explored. Seven Skies has sought out an amazing experience that begins in a private reserve overlooking the south face of the volcano. From here you board a private sky tram gondola and rise smoothly through 236m on your 1250m ride, stopping at your leisure along the way to capture stunning volcano views.

After reaching the top and soaking up more glorious views including Arenal Lake and the surrounding rolling hillsides, get kitted up to zip line through the canopy. Travelling along nearly 3km of cables through the rain forest, you’ll experience a whole new perspective of panoramic volcano views. After your exhilarating descent, join with your naturalist guide for a stroll along the canopy walkway. Consisting of a rainforest trail connected by a series of suspension bridges located over the treetops, the trail sees you traverse ravines and hills, and spot wildlife as you cross through dense forest.

As always, Seven Skies has also meticulously researched the best accommodation in Costa Rica, and your home in volcano country is the luxurious Spring Villas at Nayara Hotel Spa & Gardens. Costa Rica’s newest boutique hotel is surrounded by the lush vegetation of pristine rainforest. Here you’ll enjoy the ultimate in luxury with four-poster beds, oversized bathrooms, lavish furnishings, secluded gardens with outdoor showers, and a private pool fed by mineral springs. The perfect retreat after adventure packed days.
