Ten of life's great journeys - Mount Kinabalu, Borneo

A slow and steady climb to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, Borneo is one of those awe-inspiring experiences. You are on the roof of Borneo and on a clear day the views reach as far as the Philippines. It’s the piece de resistance of the Seven Skies Borneo experience. Award-winning travel writer Rob McFarland joined us last year, and has crowned it one of life’s great journeys in The Age’s list of 10 journeys you should take in your life.

Joining esteemed company - from walking the Torres del Paine in Chile to white-water rafting through the Grand Canyon or soaking up the vista of dreamy Bora Bora - McFarland suggests that with the climb to Mount Everest an amusement park these days, the very achievable climb to the picturesque summit of Mount Kinabalu offers an experience of a lifetime.

For us, what makes the experience of Mount Kinabalu worthy of adding to that bucket list of things you just must do in your life, is that singularly beautiful moment when you stand at the summit with the sun rising in the distance and the virgin jungles below, and you know that you’ve made it to the roof of Borneo. McFarland beautifully captured the essence of the Mount Kinabalu experience in his feature article on the Seven Skies Borneo experience last year:

The view is mesmerising. Fingers of mist creep up the mountain while an undulating cloud-covered blanket of hills and valleys stretches out to the horizon. I spend half an hour savouring this panorama before reluctantly beginning the long, toe-jamming descent back to reality.
