Raffles Singapore – an elegant retreat steeped in history

Raffles Singapore is without doubt one of the world’s most iconic hotels and the grande old dame of hotels of this small island state. Originally built in 1887 on Beach Road, which was then waterfront property in Singapore, it is now located in the heart of Singapore with fantastic shopping and eating options on its doorstep.

Staying at Raffles is one of those experiences in life that should not be missed. Cocooned in a rich and fascinating history, journey back in time as you pull up in the gravel driveway, have your door opened by the iconic Sikh doorman and enter the grand yet intimate lobby. With just over 100 suites, the hotel is set around a number of soothing courtyard gardens which make it feel very much like an inner city sanctuary and unlike anything else on offer in Singapore. With the hotel quite often the hotel choice for visiting heads of state and royalty, we loved the palm court suites which are very private and quiet with sweeping views of the palm courtyard, and the verandah with rattan chairs thoughtfully located outside each suite provides the perfect spot to soak up the classical architecture and colonial decor over a late afternoon gin and tonic.

Our favourite rooms, however, are by far and away the Personality Suites, twelve of which have been named after personalities or celebrities who have stayed at the hotel over the years during its long and distinguished history. We were lucky enough to stay in the Joseph Conrad Suite complete with antique writing desk and an original Joseph Conrad autograph.

For those that like their afternoon tea, high tea in the elaborately decorated Tiffin Room is yet another magnificent way to enjoy the superb Raffles hospitality and service all harking back to a bygone era. And of course, there is the famous Singapore Sling, first created in the Long Bar at Raffles. Another one of those great experiences in life is to enjoy one of these in its original home. A memorable hotel experience and one not to be missed when visiting Singapore.
