The breathtaking Northern Lights from Iceland

A land of exquisite natural beauty, of dramatic landscapes, exploding geysers and luminous blue icebergs, Iceland is well known for its natural landmarks and attractions. One of the biggest drawcards to this land of fire and ice is an attraction not on land but in the sky - the famed Northern Lights.

Experience the thrill of venturing out in the dark Icelandic night in search of the magnificent aurora borealis. From a wispy white cloud-like formation with hints of green, to the explosion of blues, purples, greens and reds that light up the sky like a firework celebration, the Northern Lights is a breathtaking sight.

Although the lights can be elusive, the best season to see them is from September to mid-April, when nights are fully dark and skies are clear. To get the best odds of seeing the lights in Iceland, we recommend that you stay a minimum of seven nights in the country, as the lights tend to be very active for two to three nights, then low for four to five nights, in ongoing cycles.

With the aurora activity in Iceland unusually high over recent years, it’s the perfect time to plan your northern winter adventure.
