The Upper House, Hong Kong – high-style haven

Our travels take us far and wide and so it was we recently spent some time in Hong Kong solely to experience an amazing hotel we had been hearing all about and to eat our way around the incredible food scene on offer here. Our home was the high-style haven, The Upper House. And it literally is The Upper House, sitting high above another hotel and occupying the prime floors from levels 37 to 50 in the heart of Hong Kong island and close to the hip Wan Chai district.

Small and intimate, the hotel bills itself as more of a home than a hotel, and it’s this atmosphere that sets The Upper House apart from its rivals and firmly at the top of our list of incredible hotel experiences. It’s the small things that make staying in a hotel a true experience, and The Upper House has this in spades. We loved that right from the beginning we felt at home – from the seamless in-room iPad check-in and complimentary mini-bar stocked with everything from coconut water to cookies, to staff who magically knew our names whether we entered the lobby or sat down for breakfast each morning, despite the hotel having some 117 rooms and suites.

Of course, the piece de resistance that shoots this hotel into the stratosphere are the sublime interiors. The work of renowned architect Andre Fu, the thoughtfulness and beauty of the design here sets the benchmark for others to follow. The Upper House boasts some of the largest rooms in Hong Kong and without doubt we think some of the most drop-dead gorgeous bathrooms with views that simply have to be seen to be believed. Floor to ceiling glass windows with open terrazzo showers and an oversized bath are the order of the day.

Each room is beautifully and thoughtfully designed with simple, clear lines and a brilliant use of warm woods and woolens. Sprawling lounges, a large walk-in wardrobe and a fully stocked complimentary mini-bar complete the picture. We recommend the harbour facing rooms and suites which have amazing views over Victoria Harbour and to Kowloon, although if you’ve stayed in Hong Kong plenty of times you might like a change of scenery with the island view rooms offering an equally great panorama of the brilliant green Hong Kong hills behind.

Taking breakfast 49 floors above Hong Kong was an absolute highlight, with The Upper House offering a delectable a la carte breakfast. Our personal favourite was the Upper East breakfast with congee, rice noodles and a delicious assortment of steamed dumplings. And coming in a close second was the papaya and mango salad with lime and brown sugar. A brilliant way to start the day.
